Deerfield Beach

The recorded history of Deerfield Beach dates back to 1877, when the first non-natives glimpsed the swamps, dense vines, palmetto, wild fig trees, cabbage palms and pine groves along Hillsboro River. To the south, Key West and Miami were flourishing villages. By the spring of 1896, Henry M. Flagler had extended his Florida East Coast Railroad down the coastline into Miami, a development that helped open the wilderness to settlers. On June 22, 1898 a post office was established at Deerfield to serve the fledgling town’s 20 settlers. It is said this name was chosen because of the numerous deer that grazed along the Hillsboro River. The river, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean, formed the northern boundary of Deerfield. The town of Deerfield incorporated on June 11, 1925 and the name was changed to Deerfield Beach in 1951.

Deerfield Beach today has over 125 acres of open space, a 4,700 linear foot beach and a 920-foot fishing pier. Residents have access to three, 1/2-mile jogging trails, two roller hockey courts, a full-service tennis center with six courts, plus eight additional tennis courts throughout the city. The city is home to facilities including a gymnasium and several outdoor basketball courts, as well as many neighborhood playgrounds and tot lots. Deerfield Beach also has three community centers that offer a wide variety of recreational, social and cultural programs. The Community Services department sponsors a wide variety of special events throughout the year including Women's Professional Volleyball, the Super Boat Grand Prix and Moonlight Melodies Summer Beach Concerts.

The Deerfield Beach community is committed to providing unique public services and maintaining a high quality of life. Residents are focused on making their town a great place to work as well as play. To that end, the city prides itself on creating an environment where business can flourish.

The city is strategically located in proximity to major highways including I-95, the Florida Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway, giving it easy access to major international airports in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami. Sea transport is supported by nationally prominent seaports, located in Port Everglades and the Port of Miami. The railway that runs through the area serves the Tri-Rail Commuter Train, Amtrak and numerous commercial carriers. Deerfield Beach is conveniently located just south of Palm Beach County.

Looking to its future, Deerfield is using its greatest asset, the ocean. The city is planning a 2.5-acre beachfront park with native plants, a boardwalk, a dune system, a sea turtle educational display facility, an observation deck and added parking. Proud of its heritage, yet also progressive in its present, the city of Deerfield Beach looks forward to meeting the challenges of the future as a true partner in the global economy.
